The tech industry’s biggest losers in 2024
Welcome to 2025. Say goodbye to yesterday with that biggest losers in tech. Choosing our favorite villains in 2024 was a challenge because it just wasn’t a good time for technology. With the depressing social media spiral, the will-they-or-won’t-they dance of banning TikTok in the US, and the endless edited and fake content, it’s just so loud. Is it the Internet of Slop? Is it exhaustion? Do AIs talk to AIs about AIs? In between lies the obsolescence of previous connectors, Intel’s great difficulty in changing its fortunes, and, ugh, those AI assistants.
And since it’s a new year, we’ll be making some changes to the Engadget newsletter over the next few weeks. We’ll continue to cover the biggest tech stories and events, but we’ll also include more context, more writers and editors, and even some features from Engadget’s past. It’s the start of a new year and a new batch of creative works has entered the public domain. Today, many materials copyrighted in 1929 and sound recordings from 1924 are fair game to freely adapt, reuse, copy and share. Several pioneering directors presented their first projects with sound, such as Alfred Hitchcock’s blackmail and Cecil B. DeMilles dynamite. 1929 was also the year that Walt Disney directed the legendary short film “Skeleton Dance” by Ub Iwerks and that Mickey Mouse starred in his first sound film.
Two games from a decade ago and a crucial flop.
Sony has just unveiled the first PlayStation Plus games of 2025, available to all subscribers. This month includes Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered And The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe. Suicide Squad is a surprising addition: It suffered multiple delays, received mostly negative reviews, and reportedly cost Warner Bros. around $200 million. The developers announced that the current season of content would be the last, but there are no plans to retire the game yet. So play it while you… can?
