The Sentry: Hideki Matsuyama and Collin Morikawa face Sunday’s showdown in the first PGA Tour event of 2025 | Golf News
Hideki Matsuyama and Collin Morikawa face a showdown on Sunday at The Sentry with just one shot separating the two after they both shot 11-under 62 in round three.
Former Masters champion Matsuyama leads at 27 under par at Kapalua – a 54-hole record at the event – ahead of two-time major champion Morikawa at 26 under in the first PGA Tour tournament of 2025.
Matsuyama made an eagle putt at 18, tying the course record, but had to settle for birdie, one of 11 shots the Japanese hit as he set a personal career best on a flawless day in Hawaii and extended his lead in the second round.
American Morikawa also finished with a birdie, his ninth of the round, along with a 25-foot eagle on the par-5 fifth that gave him a temporary lead.
“Collin played well and I just followed him, so good day,” Matsuyama said. “It was a lot of fun, but I want him to take it easy tomorrow.”
Morikawa said of the finals performance: “If you look back at the greats, that’s what they did. When you look back at Tiger (Woods), he did that every week.”
“I think if I asked myself, ‘Have I done this every time for the last six years?’ Probably not.)
“But it’s hard. What I’m going to say this year is, ‘I have four days, let’s see what I can do.'”
Belgium’s Thomas Detry is five shots behind Matsuyama in third place at 22 under par after an eight-under win on Saturday/#
South Korea’s Sungjae Im is one shot further back at 21 under after matching Matsuyama and Morikawa’s 11-under 62, while England’s Harry Hall is fifth at 20 under after a 66 in the third round.
