According to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island began spewing fresh lava around 02:00 local time (12:00 GMT).
Officials say there is no immediate danger to residents because volcanic activity is currently confined to a limited area of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
They have warned that the most immediate threat is volcanic smog, which could reach populated areas downwind.
