This is the title of a fascinating book by Dr. Raphael E. Cuomo, professor at the University of California of the San Diego School of Medicine. The main thesis is that addictive behavior make us more susceptible to cancer. And addiction is not only drug abuse such as drugs, alcohol or smoking, but also occurs in many other forms that are widespread in our modern society. This includes addiction on social media or other “screen shapes” and for unprocessed foods.
Dr. Cuomo shows in detail how these cancer risks grow through a variety of mechanisms such as the weakening of our immune system, the increase in chronic inflammation, the throwing of insulin signals and the weakening repair mechanisms. Fortunately, all of this can be improved by changes in the lifestyle such as reduced screen time, better sleep, better nutrition and movement. This list resembles what you would read in connection with lifestyle and aging. For me, this was more motivation for me to continue working on the lifestyle measures that I already pursue for a healthy aging. I can only recommend this interesting and well -written book.
