As an ’80s kid and horror fan, I have a particular fondness for slasher films, the genre popularized by bloodthirsty icons like Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger. This genre reached its peak with the release of Wes Cravens Scream in 1996, and fans like me have been chasing the dragon ever since, hoping that another director could deliver a similar mix of humor, horror, and hemoglobin. Now the most unexpected director has done just that, and fans are hoping to see the best slasher since Scream can stream now thanksgiving on Netflix.

By far the biggest name is Patrick Dempsey (best known for his performance on Grey’s Anatomy), who plays a sheriff trying to save the town from the worst threat it has ever faced. Rounding out the cast are some film veterans like Gina Gershon (known for her performance in “ Bound) and Rick Hoffman (known for his performance in Samantha Who?), as well as relative newcomers like Addison Rae (known as a popular influencer on social media platforms like TikTok).
Besides Dempsey, the other big name attached to this production is director Eli Roth, a horror veteran known for gore-fests like hostel. Compared to this franchise, the kills are in thanksgiving are generally tamer, making this film a bit more accessible to the average Netflix viewer. But Roth still knows how to take the film’s scares to the highest level, as evidenced by a scene involving an oven that will have you snuggling into your couch cushion while watching it.

Luckily, Eli Roth manages to harmonize Scream-like sensibility with its own trademark humor and gory violence. In addition to its quality as a horror film, thanksgiving is arguably Roth at his best: the film tones down the excesses of his Hostel films while sharpening the broad humor of his debut film Cabin fevermaking it a crowd-pleaser that’s infinitely more accessible than, say The Green Inferno.
