Dani Olmo and Pau Victor have both received temporary player registrations from the Spanish government despite repeated rejections from the Spanish Football Federation and La Liga in recent weeks.

Spain’s sports council, the Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD), decided on Wednesday that the two players should be put up for selection pending a final decision in the case.

Olmo and Victor were both deregistered from La Liga on December 31 after Barcelona missed the deadline to demonstrate compliance with the league’s Financial Fair Play rules.

The club’s attempts to re-register the players were rejected by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and La Liga, leading to the Catalan club submitting a 52-page appeal and more than 60 supporting documents to the CSD, Spain’s highest sports council Government.

Olmo had a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave the club on a free transfer if he was unregistered, but both he and Victor remained committed to remaining at the club.

La Liga rules state that a player cannot be registered twice in the same season. However, Wednesday’s decision means the pair can – at least for now – feature in all competitions for Barcelona again this season.

In a statement, the CSD granted Barcelona’s “urgent precautionary measure requested by FC Barcelona and players Dani Olmo and Pau Victor.”

“This measure, which is provisional until the appeal lodged by the club and the above-mentioned players is finally decided, suspends the agreement of the Supervisory Committee of the RFEF-LaLiga Coordination Agreement of January 4, 2025 and the cancellation of the sports licenses of the above Player.”

The news came just before Barcelona’s Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Athletic Club, but none of the players were named in the squad for today’s game.

Manager Hansi Flick said before the game: “I’m really happy with it (the verdict). I think the entire team, Dani and Pau of course, are more than happy. And everyone in the club too.

“It’s the right decision.”

Barcelona’s sporting director Deco echoed Flick’s opinion: “I’m happy for the players. We have been through very difficult days and the players want to play.

“But we are so happy with the result and that the CSD proved that we were right and that is the most important thing.”

However, Jon Uriarte, president of Barcelona’s semi-final opponents Athletic Club, said of the result: “We are seeing things that are ridiculous,” adding: “Cases like this do Spanish football a disservice.”
