The Au advocates the integration of climate questions in peace and development strategies

The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU) insisted on the importance of integrating environmental and climate dimensions in peace, security and development strategies in Africa. In a press release that was published at the end of his meeting on March 6 under Moroccan Presidency, the CPS called for more investments in the adaptation of agriculture, the sustainability of natural resources and the stability of human and institutional resources.

The Council also emphasized the need to strengthen the cooperation between African actors and international partners in order to cope with climatic challenges. He recommends the definition of a common African position on the connection between climate change, peace and security, the creation of a collaboration framework and the improvement of research and data acquisition in Africa. The focus is on climate security, social integration, the protection of marginalized groups and the fight against gender -specific violence.

The CPS finally asked the AU Commission to support continental initiatives, including the initiative for the adaptation of African agriculture (AAA), security, stability and sustainable initiative in Africa (SSS) and the three climatic commissions of the Sahela, the island states and the Congo Basin. He also calls on the mobilization of the financing in order to strengthen the ability of the continent, to anticipate the climatic challenges and to treat them effectively.
