The Swedish government has announced plans to tighten its gun laws days after the worst mass shootings in the country’s history.
The shooter, who killed 10 people on Tuesday and in an adult education center in Orebro, had four legal rifles – three of them were found at school, the police said.
The Sweden center-right coalition said that it would try to increase the checking of weapon licenses and restrict access to semi-automatic weapons.
“There are certain types of weapons that are so dangerous that they should only be considered an exception for civilian purposes,” said the government.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson told reporters during a visit to Latvia: “We have to make sure that only the right people have weapons in Sweden.”
The Swedish Democrats said they agreed to change the law, including larger restrictions on access to semi -automatic weapons.
“The terrible act of violence in Erebro raises several important questions about weapons legislation,” said the party in an explanation.
The AR-15, a special style of the semi-automatic rifle, which can wear both powerful and large magazines, was used by the government as an example of weapons that could be restricted.
The police did not say exactly which weapons were used in the attack, but the AR-15 was used in many mass shootings in the United States.
They confirmed that several long rifles were found at the point of the attack in Orebro together with 10 empty magazines.
According to the current Swedish weapons laws, anyone over 18 who has no criminal record can apply for a permission to shout, a pistol or a semi -automatic rifle.
You have to justify the police why you need a weapon. People over 20 can apply for a special dispensation to have a fully automatic weapon.
According to the figures of the Swedish broadcaster, around 580,000 Swedes have SVT.
A Swiss study from 2017 showed that around 2.3 million weapons were held by civilian population in Sweden. That is about 23 weapons per 100 people compared to 29 in Norway and 120 per 100 in the USA.
A theory and a practical test are required to receive a hunting license in Sweden. About 280,000 Swedes have one.
The police still have to publicly identify the victims of the attack in Orebro, but said that they had completed the conclusion of the identification process and an announcement on Friday.
According to family and community members, Syrians, who fled the war there as refugees, and a Bosnian were among the dead.
The police have not yet said anything about the possible motive of the murderer. Members of the Syrian Orthodox Community in Orebro told the BBC that they feared that he was driven by a hatred of foreigners.
Sweden has a relatively high level of gun ownership and arms crime according to European standards, although most weapons are legally obsessed and used for hunting.
Arms crime is mainly connected to gangs that also used bombs to set each other.
The non -gang -related weapon crime is less rare, and the attack on Tuesday was the nation’s first shooting and the worst mass shooting. A total of four people were killed in two separate schools in 2015 and 2022.
