Surace KOs Munguia: Did what Canelo couldn’t

Jaime Munguia was surprisingly knocked out by Bruno Surace, a fighter with just four knockouts, in the sixth round of their clash at the Estadio Caliente in Tijuana, Mexico, on Saturday evening.

Canelo comparison

What made this knockout of Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOs) even more impressive was that he had to get off the deck in the second round to come back with a single punch against Munguia in the sixth round.

What does this say about Canelo Alvarez? Not even he could knock out Munguia (44-2, 35 KOs) when they fought May 4 in Las Vegas. Canelo defeated Mugnuia via a 12-round unanimous decision, and he never came close to knocking him out.

Losing in front of his hometown fans in Tijuana, Mexico must be a bitter pill to swallow for Munguia because they all saw what happened. His popularity will now decline in Mexico.

Berlanga’s plans failed

Edgar Berlanga took the news of Munguia’s loss quite harshly. He was hoping to face him next in a match between Mexico and Puerto Rico on PPV. Berlanga complained that Munguia messed up the bag, which is a fair statement.

Surace would knock out Berlanga because of the way he fought tonight. He would make it as easy for him as Munguia did.

A fight between them on PPV would be impossible to sell as both guys are coming off losses. It would be impossible to sell, especially when one of them wasn’t even trying to win, just surviving.

What the New York-born Berlanga should do is call out Surace, and if he can’t get him, fight Caleb Plant. There is no pocket for Berlanga. Canelo won’t fight him again, and Munguia certainly won’t either.
