Strasbourg: Several injured after two trams collided

Several people were injured in a collision between two trams in the tunnel under Strasbourg train station on Saturday afternoon.

“The number of victims, which is not final, is around 30 to 35 victims, they are only relative emergencies,” said the Bas-Rhin prefecture, which had spoken in an initial figure of 20 injured. Shortly afterwards, firefighters reported around fifty injuries.

The prosecutor’s office announced that it had opened an unintentional injury investigation aimed at “determining the causes of the accident and identifying possible criminal liability.” “The initial investigation made it possible to exclude the hypothesis of a voluntary act,” said interim prosecutor Alexandre Chevrier.

A large security area was set up in front of the train station, where numerous ambulances took up positions. Injured people were evacuated on stretchers, others were treated under the station’s glass roof.
