Stargate has a whole range of fan-favorite characters in the various films and series SG-1 Samantha Carter and Jack O’Neil, Rodney McKay in Atlantis, Ronald Greer there universeand, frankly, countless others, but none quite like the bureaucratic Richard Woolsey, who went from appearing in an episode that was supposed to be annoying to becoming a hero as the team leader. Played by Star Trek: Voyager’s Robert Picardo, the fans actually have another series to thank for bringing him into the franchise: The outer limits. If it weren’t for the science fiction anthology series that was so close to filming Stargate SG-1 At his home studio in Vancouver, Picardo would never have been part of another hit sci-fi franchise.
One-off appearance as the main character of the series
The outer limitsa science fiction version of The twilight zonewas first broadcast in 1963, but was re-aired for a longer run in 1995 and ended in 2002. Woolsey was brought back a few times during SG-1’s run, intentionally being an annoying hindrance to the team and a recurring nuisance to viewers. As Picardo said in a 2008 interview with Gateworld, “He basically came into the game as a conflict character.”
The Evolution of Woolsey
Richard Woolsey’s second appearance in Inauguration brought about an important change to the character, adding a new dimension to him, as Robert Picardo himself described it Stargate SG-1 As a result, they “began the process of rehabilitating the Woolsey character by showing that he really meant well and had a passion for the importance of having civilian oversight of secret military operations.” It was an important moment for the character and laid the foundation for how the character would evolve, although surprisingly he remained true to himself throughout the rest of his appearances. It’s just the world that has changed around him.
At the time Stargate: Atlantis Following Amanda Tapping’s decision to leave the role, the cast was in a state of upheaval. There was a very short list of potential stars who could be brought in to replace them, with Robert Picardo at the forefront, which turned out to be a moment of brilliance. From a bureaucrat who questions the necessity of the SG-1 program, to a leader who understands that it’s okay to throw away the book for the good of the men and women under his command. The Woolsey who violates several safety protocols in “The Seed” is a far cry from his first appearance in “Heroes, Part 2,” and legions of Stargate fans wouldn’t have it any other way, and that’s why The outer limits And Stargate SG-1 both were filmed in Vancouver.
