Spain: Legal action in sight against importers of Moroccan tomatoes
The import of Moroccan tomatoes continues to cause controversy in Spain. The Spanish Coordination of Farmers and Growers Organizations (COAG) announced that it will take legal action against companies that import Moroccan tomatoes into the territory of the European Union (EU) for exceeding the tax-exempt ton limit allowed under free trade agreements between the EU and Morocco and thus committed tax fraud.
COAG reiterates that its research has shown that the figure of 230,000 tonnes has been “exceeded since 2019”. According to the organization, this excess means that around 72 million euros were not paid into the state treasury, i.e. 14 million euros per year.
