Southampton are looking for a new head coach following the sacking of Russell Martin

Southampton parted ways with manager Russell Martin following their 5-0 defeat to Tottenham, which left the club nine points behind the Premier League’s sure-fire leaders.

The 38-year-old successfully led the Saints back to the Premier League last season, securing promotion with a memorable play-off final victory over Leeds at Wembley Stadium.

This season has been a stark contrast, however, with Southampton enjoying rapid form, losing 13 of their 16 league games so far.

The team’s only league win this season came against Everton in November and they struggled to score, scoring just 11 goals – their lowest tally in the division.

In a statement, Southampton said: “At the start of the season we all knew the challenges we would face this year as we re-adjust to life in the top flight and compete in the best and most competitive league in the world.”

“However, the reality of our situation is clear. The Board has been supportive of Russell and his employees and has been open and transparent about our expectations.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Russell and his staff for all the hard work and commitment they have brought to the club on and off the pitch over the last 18 months.”

“Everyone associated with Southampton FC will always have fantastic memories of last season, particularly the play-off final victory in May.”

Simon Rusk, the club’s under-21 coach, has been appointed interim coach and will take charge of the senior team from Wednesday’s Carabao Cup quarter-final game against Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Martin’s departure coincides with another managerial departure in the Premier League, as Wolves also announced the sacking of Gary O’Neil on the same day.

Southampton’s struggles in the top flight this season have highlighted how difficult it is to readjust to life in the Premier League and the club will now look for a new direction to reignite their survival hopes.
