Arsenal have confirmed the appointment of Renee Slegers as their permanent head coach.

Slegers has been in office on an interim basis since October following the resignation of Jonas Eidevall.

The Women’s Super League side are in third place, seven points behind leaders Chelsea.

And after a successful spell, the Slegers will be hoping to restore the Gunners’ dominance in women’s football.

Speaking for the first time as permanent manager, she said: “I’m very happy to be sitting here now and we have made the decision together to carry on like this.”

“I just saw what the players did and how we came into contact with the staff, the club and the fans. That really contributed to my decision to take the job because when I was thrown into the job it was obviously very sudden, it was very unexpected and I was here to serve the club but started during my time as interim he to grow.

“You start to look at longer term things and realize where we are going as a team and also the connection with the fans.

“I think I mentioned the game against Manchester United where we didn’t get three points, we got one point, but we’re playing really well and the fans are behind us and supporting us. “I think that was for me too a crucial moment to see, okay, there’s something here that we can do. There is something positive we can create. It has grown over these months.

“Obviously the role of interim head coach is one that I have never held before. So it’s interesting to see how you take on a role like that when a head coach suddenly leaves.

“I think we had the game against Valerenga the next day so we had to get going straight away. For me it learned a lot, but also brought a lot of joy. (I’m tired of) creating a relaxed atmosphere where joy and togetherness are very important to try to empower players and staff and it’s been interesting. I enjoyed my time in the interim role.”
