“Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” borrowed ideas from Disney flopsand the series is a huge love letter to the Amblin and countless adventure stories. Needless to say, Jon Watts and Christopher Ford’s foray into the galaxy far, far away makes its influences clear to see, and Episode 5, “There’s a Lot to Learn About Pirates,” is no different. In fact, it’s an homage to a popular ’80s film about a group of young friends who set out to find a hidden cache full of treasure – similar to the adventure set in this episode.
Episode 5 of Skeleton Crew features Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law), SM-33 (Nick Frost) and the children as they continue their search for the The mysterious Attin planet of the “Star Wars” galaxy. However, they are forced to stop on Lanupa after learning of the infamous pirate captain Rennod’s hidden treasure trove, which could contain the coordinates needed to find the children’s homeworld – and spell trouble for them.
However, fans of ’80s adventure films may remember The Goonies after watching Episode 5. In addition to the similarities between both stories, the aforementioned pirate’s name “Thunder” is spelled backwards. This is a reference to the director of The Goonies. late Richard Donnerwho once gave the “Skeleton Crew” makers good advice.

Jon Watts and Christopher Ford are masters at telling stories about children in danger. Her horror film “Clown” tells the story of a father who wants to have fun with children after he puts on a demonic circus performer costume. “Cop Car” is about kids who are chased by a creepy sheriff after stealing his vehicle. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, on the other hand, is about children forced to navigate the galaxy far, far away and the various dangers within it. During an interview with GamesRadar+Watts revealed how Richard Donner helped him learn to tell stories with children, which he adapted into the “Star Wars” universe.
“I got this advice from Richard Donner, who I was able to spend time with shortly before his death. He talked about the casting of ‘The Goonies’ and said that you don’t cast kids for a role, you cast kids because of who they are.
Watts explained that Donner’s advice was in the back of his mind when casting the series’ young heroes – Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), KB (Kyriana Kratter) and Neel (Robert Timothy Smith) – and that he has paid out. “Skeleton Crew” boasts some excellent performances from its young cast that wouldn’t be out of place in a film like “The Goonies.”
