This isn’t the first time the “Say Yes” singer has spoken out about fans confusing her with the actress of the same name.
After actress Williams won an Emmy in 2019 for her role as Gwen Verdon in Fosse/VerdonSinger Williams said she received several comments from confused fans.
“How come when you tag and congratulate someone you see that I’m black?” the singer said via an Instagram Live. “If you go to my profile, search for ‘Michelle Williams,’ I’m black. OK? I am not mixed with nothing; I’m not mixed with Persian, Russian, I’m black.”
During her Emmy speech, actress Williams spoke about the issue of equal pay in the industry, for which singer Williams said she received criticism online.
“I’m trying to figure out, ‘Why on earth am I being cursed out in my comments on Michelle Williams’ speech?’ what I believed to be their truth. I thought it was great,” she said. “I thought she was being factual – I could be wrong. But yeah, I just said to this woman on my Instagram a few minutes ago, ‘I’m so sorry my namesake upset you, but can’t you see I’m black?'”
The “Lose My Breath” singer made it clear that she supports her The Fablemans Actress’s speech.
“She was beautiful. She was brilliant. Honey, she played Gwen Verdon great. She was great,” she said. “Now do it right and stop calling me names.”
The “Venom” actress has previously commented on the name mix-up. In one Interview with Huffpost In the video released in 2018, the actress commented on the fact that Google’s search function displayed her photo when someone searched for “Destiny’s Child Five Members.”
“It brings me one step closer Beyonceso I’m handling it pretty well,” the actress said at the time. “Now I’m going to break the ice if I ever get to meet Beyoncé. I’ll talk to her about the old days of Destiny’s Child. So thank you very much, because if that ever happens, of course I will be speechless, and now I know exactly what to say.”
