Serhii Bohachuk volunteers to fight Sebastian Fundora in March

Serhii Bohachuk has volunteered to be WBC and WBO junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora’s next challenger for his next fight in March. Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs) had two of his options for his next fight rejected by the World Boxing Organization last week.

Originally, Fundora had planned to defend against Errol Spence (28-1, 22 KOs), but the WBO decided not to sanction the fight. Their reasoning was that Spence hadn’t fought in a year and a half. After a loss, he had never fought at 154 and was not ranked in the WBO top 15.

Fundora’s team reportedly wanted to use Joey Spencer (19-1, 11 KOs), but he wasn’t ranked in the top 15 either, so he wasn’t good or an opponent.

A dangerous challenge

Former WBC interim 154-pound champion Bohachuk is ranked No. 8 by the WBO, which would make him perfect for Fundora as an opponent for his March 30 fight. The only problem is that Fundora’s management may not want to use Bohachuk (25-2, 24 KOs) because he is dangerous.

Although Fundora proved he could hit a bat last year with Tim Tszyu, things are different with Bohachuk. He is not someone who focuses on individual shots like Tszyu. He constantly throws hard punches, just like Artur Beterbiev, and he is good at fighting inside. He can generate a lot of power inside. Tszyu couldn’t do that.

If Team Fundora wants to work their way down the WBO’s list of top 15 contenders, they might not like Sebastian facing someone like Charles Conwell or Xander Zayas either. That’s two fights, just like it would be if he fought Bohachuk.

When Fundora feels he is ready, he should take the fight to Bohachuk because he is free and volunteers to fight him. That’s half the battle.
