To Buffy the Vampire SlayerOver the years, the title character has faced many difficult decisions, but perhaps the hardest was deciding who her heart belongs to: Angel, the haunted vampire with a soul, or Spike, the evil vampire who reluctantly joined the Scooby Gang and even one got its own soul.
Debates still rage throughout the community over which choice is the right one, with fan shippers rooting for either Bangel (Buffy/Angel) or Spuffy (Spike/Buffy). Even if fans will never come to a definitive answer, Buffy Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar did. In an old Reddit thread “Ask Me Anything,” she chose Angel over Spike.
Buffy, Angel and Spike
If you’ve never seen one Buffy If you’ve watched an episode or just caught a rerun every now and then, you may need a primer on how Angel and Spike became romantic interests for Gellar’s character in the first place. In short, Angel was her love interest from season one, and the series shamelessly explored the depths of romantic melodrama with the disastrous story of a vampire and a vampire hunter who fall in love. Meanwhile, Spike was introduced as an enemy and former Angel employee in Season 2, and he began to develop feelings for Buffy in Season 5, two seasons after Angel left Sunnydale for his own spin-off.
Buffy didn’t see much of Angel (aside from occasional appearances) after his spin-off began, and that spin-off made Spike a mainstay of the cast. Cordelia, a local mean girl, had also left Buffy and joined Angel as another familiar face in Los Angeles, the setting of angel. For this reason, showrunner Joss Whedon brought Marsters into the game as a regular Buffyis the fourth season, taking on the hilariously antagonistic role Cordelia once played, although the evil vampire eventually developed feelings for Buffy, culminating in their destructive (literally and metaphorically) relationship in Season 6.
Ironically, BuffyThe latest episode of “Security” did nothing to calm speculation about whether Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character should end up with Angel or Spike. At the start of the episode, she has a heartfelt conversation with Angel about her future, confirming that Spike is not a “friend” but “he in my heart.” She admits she’s not ready for a relationship and hasn’t “thought that far ahead,” but hints that she and Angel may still have a future together.
This scene might make you think that Buffy will ultimately choose Angel over Spike, but things get complicated when Spike sacrifices himself to save the world. Just before he dies, Buffy says to Spike, “I love you,” to which he replies, “No, you don’t, but thanks for saying it.” There you have it, folks: in the same Buffy episode, our huntress hinted at a romantic future with Angel And vowed her love to Spike, leaving fans forever wondering who she should have ultimately ended up with.
Sarah Michelle Gellar chooses angels
Buffy actors, though Sarah Michelle Gellar thinks Angel is the only logical choice and not Spike. On her Reddit AMA, a fan asked “Spike or Angel” and she clarified with an “ANGEL” in all caps. Later, another Redditor asked the same question and she confirmed her answer: “still Angel.”
Hearing that the woman who brought Buffy Summers to life favors Angel over Spike might be just enough to end fans’ incessant bickering over the matter. In all likelihood, however, most fans will continue to choose their battle lines based on everything from which actor gave the best performance to who had the best hair. The latter is a bit unfair, however… as all Spuffy fans know, Captain Peroxide has the better choice, and we’ll always bet that blonde bear wins Buffy’s heart over Boreanaz’s brooding bore of a bloodsucker.
