If you’ve been waiting for a bargain on a large screen OLED TV, this is it Samsung 77-inch S84D might be worth a look. It’s currently marked down to $1,599.99 at Best Buy – that’s less than half its usual price of $3,299.

The S84D benefits from OLED’s self-illuminating pixel technology, meaning its contrast is almost unbeatable. Bright highlights stand out against pitch-black backgrounds, perfect for dimly lit rooms or late-night movie marathons. And since there is no local dimming, there is no annoying “blooming” effect, where bright spots fade into dark areas. Although the HDR brightness is decent, it’s not the most dazzling OLED on the market. Large, bright scenes may appear darker due to the aggressive Automatic Brightness Limiter (ABL), affecting HDR gaming in Game mode.

Still, there’s a lot for gamers to like. With support for 4K at 120Hz, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and ultra-low input lag, it’s great for the PS5, Xbox Series or a high-end gaming PC. The lack of Dolby Vision support may disappoint some, but performance with other HDR formats holds up. If you like fast-paced games, the near-instant response time promises clear movement with almost no blur. For everyday use, the TV excels at upscaling lower resolution content like older DVDs or streams, and its excellent viewing angles make it ideal for group watch parties. Furthermore, the S84DReflection processing is intended to really minimize glare (even in well-lit rooms).

This smart TV features the 2024 version of Tizen OS, which is known for its speed and ease of use. It offers a wide range of apps that make it easy for you to find your favorite streaming services. You can also transfer content directly from your phone or play videos via a USB stick. The TV supports the Bixby and Alexa voice assistants and has a remote control with a built-in microphone for simple voice commands – whether you’re launching apps, changing inputs, checking the weather or adjusting the brightness. However, when it comes to sound, that is S84D allegedly inadequate. While dialogue is clearly audible at moderate volumes, the audio quality degrades as the volume increases, and the lack of meaningful bass makes action scenes or music sound a bit flat.
