After the White House announced President Joe Biden’s decision convert the sentences When he sentenced nearly all of the inmates on federal death row, Republicans accused him of being “soft on crime.”
“Joe Biden is confusedcorrupt and insane failure. The White House has become a memorial as Biden is paraded around by his corrupt children and his Marxist staff. That’s why 37 depraved murderers are enjoying clemency,” Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., wrote on X.

Cotton is the new chairman of both the Senate GOP conference and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
House Majority Leader Tom Emmer, R-Minn., told Fox News Digital in a statement: “Unfortunately, this is not surprising considering the Biden-Harris administration has unleashed murderers and rapists on our people for the past four years “Joe Biden’s low-key stance on crime is exactly why voters fired him and re-elected President Trump on November 5th.”

“Violent murderers should not have their sentences commuted,” said Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., on X. “We must end soft-on-crime policies.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., called the move “a slap in the face to the families who have suffered immeasurably at the hands of these animals.”
While Republicans expressed their displeasure, Biden’s announcement was celebrated by some Democrats.

“Today’s decision by the President provides accountability for life in prison without the possibility of parole and ensures that these individuals never again pose a threat to public safety, but without calling into question the myriad problems surrounding the death penalty. “I have long advocated for the abolition of the federal death penalty and commend President Biden for this act of justice and mercy as well as his leadership,” Senate Judiciary Chairman Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said in a statement.

In her own statement, Congressional Progressive Caucus Chairwoman Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., said: “This is a historic day in America. We thank President Biden for this extraordinary act to spare the 37 people facing the death penalty, a fundamentally discriminatory punishment.” Inhumane punishment is a powerful use of executive action to save lives and ensure justice.

She had previously encouraged the administration to take such measures.
Biden’s commutation of the death penalty came after he had already implemented sentence commutations for around 1,500 people in the largest single-day clemency act.
