The New York Rangers called hard-hitting defender Matt Rempe back to the squad on Friday and was suspended for eight games three days later.
Rempe elbowed and got in Dallas Stars Defender Miro Heiskanen in New York’s 3-1 win on Friday evening. He was given a game misconduct penalty for the game.

The NHL’s Player Safety Department announced that he was suspended for eight games for that game. He was also fined $80,000. The league said Rempe was considered a repeat offender. He has only played 22 regular season games in his career and has been sent off four times.
Rempe spent much of the season playing in the American Hockey League for the Rangers’ affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. He started the season with New York but didn’t stay with the team long. He was briefly recalled in November before being deported again.

Friday night’s win was Rempe’s first game with the Rangers since November 25th. He recorded three goals, two assists and 22 penalty minutes in 18 games with Hartford.
His hard-nosed style of play made him extremely popular with Rangers fans late last season and into the postseason. He was sent off twice and received a four-game suspension in March for an elbow injury to the head of New Jersey Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler.
The 2020 sixth-round pick has no points and 24 penalty minutes in five games for New York.
