Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer reveals why he parted ways with Kolkata Knight Riders

Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) newly appointed captain Shreyas Iyer recently revealed his surprising departure from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) although he led the team to its third IPL title in 2024. The move left fans and cricket pundits confused, especially since Iyer had played a key role in ending KKR’s decade-long title drought.

Shreyas joined KKR in 2022 and initially impressed with his batting but struggled with leadership. After sitting out the 2023 season due to injury, he came back stronger in 2024 and led the team to IPL glory. But in a surprising turn of events KKR decided not to retain the Mumbai batsman for the 2025 season so that he could take part in the IPL mega auction where he was bought by the Punjab-based franchise for a record-breaking ₹26.75 crore.

Lack of communication confused Shreyas Iyer

Speaking at Idea Exchange, Iyer admitted that he was baffled by KKR’s decision and the lack of communication from the franchise. Despite his successes, he remained in the dark until almost a week before the retention period expired.

“Winning the championship with KKR was a phenomenal experience. The fans were thrilling and my time there was special. But after winning the title there was a long gap in which there were no concrete discussions about where to stay. This lack of communication left me at a loss. Ultimately we decided together to separate.” Iyer explained.

Iyer also expressed disappointment over the way the situation unfolded and stressed that clear communication could have changed things. “When you find out about such a big decision just a week before the retention period expires, it shows that something is missing. It was disappointing, but I had to make a decision and it seems it worked out for the best.” he said.

Off to new horizons

After KKR remained silent on the signing, Iyer realized that the franchise might no longer see him in their plans. Although the lack of clarity was frustrating, he decided to focus on the positive and take advantage of his next opportunity.

“I assumed that if KKR had wanted me, the talks would have started earlier. But it didn’t work out that way. Despite the disappointment, I look back fondly on my time there. “Winning the championship was a defining moment in my life.” Iyer added.

A new beginning with Punjab Kings

The 2025 season brings a new chapter for Iyer as he takes on the leadership role at Punjab kings. With the franchise investing heavily in him, expectations are high for the veteran batsman to perform well as both a leader and a player.

Punjab’s acquisition of Iyer is seen as a strategic move to rebuild the team with a strong leader at the helm. Iyer’s experience as a championship winner makes him a valuable addition to the team.

As Iyer takes on his new role, fans and cricket enthusiasts will be keen to see how he leads PBKS and whether he can replicate his success from KKR. For now, Iyer has soldiered on with determination, putting both the triumphs and turmoil of his KKR journey behind him.
