Nintendo officially announces Switch 2
After weeks of leaks and wild speculation Nintendo finally announced it Switch 2the highly anticipated successor to his hugely popular hybrid handheld console. The game maker today released a two-minute teaser with a first look at the console, a handheld that looks a lot like the original Switch but is larger.
Nintendo also announced Thursday that it will hold a Direct presentation on April 2 to reveal more details about the Switch. In the video announcement, Nintendo introduced a larger screen with a pair of black-pink and black-blue Joy-Cons. The handheld will play both Switch 2 and Switch games, Nintendo said in a press release, but added that “certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on Nintendo Switch 2 or may not be fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.”
The Original Nintendo Switch came out in 2017, at a time when Nintendo was still recovering bad sales his previous console, the Wii U. However, while the Wii U failed to find an audience, the Switch soared. In 2023 it became the Third best The best console of all time behind Nintendo’s DS and the PlayStation 2, a position it still holds.
However, in 2024, the console seemed to have reached its peak. Sales were crashingand rumors about a next-gen entry were already making the rounds. Almost a year ago, when Nintendo announced Pokémon Legends: GO Fans speculated that a new console would come to their “systems” in 2025. (Not to mention that the plural “systems” here could also just refer to the Switch Lite and OLED models.)
In May last year, the company promised to unveil a new console by April 2025. Last month, details and alleged photos of the device were released leaked by the manufacturersand later on platforms like Reddit and X.
At least the die-hard Nintendo fans are having fun with the leaks – regardless of whether they are using tarot card readings to predict the announcement date or make parodies about features like “imported Italian air” or screws. “It has 10 grooves. So reveal January 10th,” one Reddit user joked. Another constructed a “summoning circle” full of old games and Mario and Luigi characters.
The next-gen Switch will be released in a very different console ecosystem than its predecessor. In 2022, Steam released its handheld Steam deckallowing gamers to play more PC games on the go. During this year’s CES, Microsoft’s “Next Generation” vice president Jason Ronald hinted at this The edge that there would be updates to the Windows gaming experience this year. Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft Gaming, has also hinted at the possibility of such a game Handheld Xbox device.
