Some migrants have mixed feelings about their Situation in New York City.
On Monday the New York Times published a report about some of the 55,000 migrants still seeking refuge in New York City. It particularly focused on people living in hotels, converted office buildings and tent dormitories at Floyd Bennett Field.
At the Watson Hotel, a Colombian mother, Ingrid Henao, admitted feeling guilty for living on taxpayers’ dime.
“We are spoiled,” Henao said. “That was never my idea. I did not leave my country under the conditions in which we fled.”
Some migrants expressed fear while living in their shelters, believing they would soon become targets of refugees Raids under the Trump administration.
“People really want to get out,” said Nicolaza Criollo New York Times.
The NYT reported that more than 225,000 migrants have come to the city since 2022, costing New York City more than $6 billion to house them.
However, the NYT appeared to downplay criticism of the refugee crisis.
“Despite critics who blamed migrants for wasting public resources, more than half of the migrants the city has accepted since the start of 2022 have left the system and the number of new arrivals is declining,” it said.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams appeared more open to working with new Trump border czar Tom Homan to begin deporting illegal immigrants. Homan told Sean Hannity Earlier this month he revealed that he had already spoken to Adams about possible strategies.
“He truly cares about public safety and ignores politics. He wants to help ICE remove criminal threats from the streets. He wants to help ICE look for threats to national security. He wants to help ICE find over 340,000 missing children, which is a lot.” “So it’s going to be a great meeting in town,” Homan said.
