Mozambique’s top court has upheld the victory of the ruling Frelimo party in an October election that sparked massive protests from opposition groups who claim the vote was rigged.
The Constitutional Council has the final say on the electoral process and its decision is likely to spark further protests in Mozambique, a southern African country of nearly 35 million people that Frelimo has ruled since independence from Portugal in 1975.
Opposition leader Venancio Mondlane claims the Oct. 9 vote was rigged in Frelimo’s favor and that a separate count shows he won enough votes to take office.
