Jennifer Crumbley, the convicted mother of Oxford school shooterurged a judge to release her from prison, claiming it was “extremely unfair and unjust” to keep her locked up while her appeal process is ongoing.
The request for release came after Crumbley was sentenced four counts of involuntary manslaughter for son Ethan, who was shot on November 30, 2021. The Oxford High School shooting killed Tate Myre, 16; Justin Shilling, 16; Hana St. Juliana, 14; and Madisyn Baldwin, 17, and injured seven others. Her husband, James Crumbley, was later convicted of the same charge.
Crumbley’s attorney, Michael Deszi, filed a motion Thursday in Oakland County Circuit Court, arguing that Crumbley is not a “flight risk” and poses “no danger to the public.”
“This case is botched, starting with the prosecution’s overreaching charge of involuntary manslaughter against a parent for the premeditated crimes of her son, who was charged and treated as an adult in the eyes of the law,” Deszi wrote in the court filing.

Deszi argued that Crumbley should not be jailed until her case is reached Michigan Supreme Court.
“…It would be extremely unfair and unjust to keep Ms. Crumbley locked up for years while this matter is slowly litigated – probably for years – in the appeals courts,” Dezsi wrote, noting that she has already been locked up for more than three years .
“Given the obviously flimsy nature of these allegations, the prosecution should not reap the rewards of a lengthy unlawful incarceration before the Michigan Supreme Court can hear and decide this case,” he said.

In a statement Thursday, Oakland County Chief Deputy District Attorney David Williams said Jennifer Crumbley should remain locked up because of her actions – not the actions of her then-15-year-old son.
“Jennifer Crumbley was indicted by a jury of her peers for her own actions and inactions that led to the Oxford High School shooting – not for the actions of her son,” he said.
“A 12-member jury listened to testimony and reviewed countless pieces of evidence before unanimously finding them guilty as charged and the judge sentencing them accordingly,” he said. “This was an egregious matter that resulted in a conviction and a prison sentence of 10 to 15 years.”

The Crumbley parents made history as the first parents to be convicted a mass shooting committed by the mass shooting of their child.
Jennifer was sentenced to between 10 and 15 years in prison after an Oakland County court heard evidence that the now 46-year-old neglected her son’s cries for help in the years before the shooting.

She and James also showed up at Oxford High on the same day Ethan was shooting people in the hallways to discuss with school administrators violent images the then 15-year-old was drawing on a worksheet in class, but they left and did it get back to work shortly afterwards.
Earlier this month, Jennifer Crumbley asked the court to overturn her conviction or grant her a new trial.
