Marrakech – The Moroccan police thwarted an attempted maritime smuggling operation early Tuesday and confiscated 17.74 tons of cannabisharz (Chira), said the General Directorate for National Security (DGSN).

The operation, which was carried out with the intelligence provided by the Territorial Supervision General Directorate (DGSt), took place on the coast of Sidi Ishak between Safi and Essaouira. The authorities intercepted a freight car loaded with the medication when it was prepared for the transfer to two inflatable boats.

According to a DGSN declaration, the police also confiscated sea engines, navigation devices and other materials that were used in the smuggling test.

The investigation is carried out as part of the regulatory supervision in order to identify suspects and to determine potential national and international connections to the commercial knob.

The bust is part of Morocco’s wider approach to transnational drug trafficking.
