Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim said his side were the better side in Thursday’s 4-3 Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat at Tottenham, but said they were undone by a more clinical performance from the hosts.
United trailed 3-0 shortly after half-time but scored twice within seven minutes to get the game back on track and kept the pressure on even after Son Heung-min scored a fourth goal for the hosts.
Jonny Evans’ late header threatened to force extra time, but Spurs held on and progressed to the semi-finals.
“We lost connection at the start of the second half, it was a tough moment for us, about 10 minutes. And then we (returned), I think we did a great job,” Amorim told Sky Sports.
“If you look at the whole game, I think we were the best team, but they were more clinical. We (lost) the game, but the boys’ fight was really important for me.
“Overall it was a good game, but it has no taste. We didn’t win, we have to concentrate on the next game.”
Amorim, who succeeded Erik ten Hag in November, said 13th-placed United still had a long way to go before they could challenge for the Premier League title.
“We are improving as a team… our goal is to win the Premier League. How long will it take? I don’t know, but that’s our goal,” he added.
United host sixth-placed Bournemouth on Sunday.
