Maguire hopes to extend his contract with Manchester United

Harry Maguire is confident of potentially extending his stay at Manchester United after holding “positive” discussions with the club.

Maguire’s current contract is expected to expire at the end of the season, but United retain the option to extend it for another year and keep him at the club until 2026.

The England international was close to moving to West Ham in 2023, but the transfer fell through.

Since then, Maguire has found himself further down the defensive hierarchy following the summer arrivals of Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro.

But after a standout performance in United’s dramatic 2-1 derby win over Manchester City on Sunday, the 31-year-old remains hopeful about his future at Old Trafford.

“I haven’t really thought about (my long-term future),” Maguire said.

“I still have an option in their hands this year. But yeah, right now all the signs are positive and the conversation I’m having is really positive.”

Asked if talks over a long-term contract were underway, Maguire simply replied: “Yes.”

The centre-back was a surprise starter in Ruben Amorim’s lineup for the game at the Etihad.

Maguire put in a solid defensive performance and kept Erling Haaland quiet as United scored two late goals to secure a dramatic win.

“It’s been a difficult start to the season for us and there hasn’t been much to celebrate for our fans, so it’s for them,” Maguire added.

“Honestly, I thought the game was 50-50. Could have gone either way. It’s an improvement, but there’s still a long way to go.”

The win was a significant result for Amorim, who has enjoyed mixed results since replacing Erik ten Hag as United manager.

“I think you can see that we have a good structure, a good style of play and the way we are supposed to work,” Maguire added.

“He is tactically very good. He has proven that he is a winner.

“And look, we’re still pretty new. I think he’s been here for about a month now and we’re really excited about where we’re going and where we can take this club. I’m sure he’ll take it positively.”
