Aston Villa missed the chance to climb the table as they had to share points with Brighton in a thrilling game at Villa Park.

Brighton – who are now winless in seven Premier League games – took the lead when a long ball over the roof missed the Villa defense and was beaten by Simon Adingra.

Ollie Watkins equalized from the penalty spot and then set up his England teammate Morgan Rogers for a fine goal as Villa took the lead.

But Brighton held on and right-back Tariq Lamptey fired a lovely low shot to ensure the Seagulls went home with a point.

Villa ended the year in ninth place, three points behind Newcastle in fifth, while Brighton are two points behind in tenth.

Brighton have dropped 18 points from winning positions this season but got off to a great start when Ezri Konsa was beaten by Joao Pedro with a long ball and Adingra’s finish was exceptional.

Villa thought they should have had a penalty when Rogers was brought down by Jan Paul van Hecke, but then they got one when Rogers went down following a corner.

Watkins, back in the team on his 29th birthday due to Jhon Duran’s suspension, made no mistake.

Villa were clearly in the lead at this point and Rogers’ finish after chesting down a pass from Watkins was sublime.

But Brighton recovered well and Lamptey’s low shot secured a draw.
