World chess No. 1 Magnus Carlsen has won the support of the world’s most popular YouTube creator after he pulled out of a tournament following a request from organizers not to wear jeans.

Norway’s Carlsen was defending his title at the FIDE Rapid and Blitz World Championships in New York when he was fined for his clothing and told to change immediately.

The 34-year-old had offered to change his trousers for the next day but backed out after the decision, adding that he was “too old to care too much about appeal at this point”.

Carlsen then used X, where he has more than a million followers, to playfully share his “OOTD” — a nod to “outfit of the day” posts often used by users to reflect their style choices.

The American MrBeast – whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson – was among Carlsen’s many admirers who responded positively to the post.

“Savage,” replied the social media sensation, who has more than 339 million subscribers on YouTube and is the third-most followed of any TikTok account with nearly 107 million followers on the platform.

In a statement, FIDE said the five-time world chess champion had been fined £159 and stressed that its rules would be applied “impartially”.

The controversy is likely to bolster Carlsen’s status as the world’s best-known chess player – a position that has helped him make huge gains in the nearly 15 years he dominated the rankings.

His partnerships and endorsements include gaming chair and desk manufacturer Secretlab and payment card service provider Mastercard.

Play Magnus – the chess training and competition app that Carlsen founded in 2013 – is expected to attract his most lucrative commercial interest.
