I’ve received several messages from readers lately that make my spider senses tingle.

Here are a few examples:

“I’ve been training three times a week for 16 weeks. It’s going well and I’m seeing changes, but I’m not sure if my progress is good enough or what I’m missing.”

“I’m worried that my goals aren’t specific enough. I feel a bit lost and there’s so much to think about. I’m not sure I’ve done everything right.”

It reflects a question I’ve already talked about: What does “sufficient” fitness actually look like??

It is Normal to ask these questions. We all crave reassurance that what we do actually matters.

But what if our fears are exploited by a fitness industry obsessed with them? optimization – Focus on details and exaggerate their importance? And as a Magic: the Gathering nerd, I get it. I Love I take care of the details and refine the system.

But when we focus too much on “perfect,” we can lose sight of how impactful the basic things really are. And how incredibly AWESOME it is that you are already working on these pieces. Don’t get me wrong. My message is not, “Don’t worry! Just do the basics.”

For so many people I talk to, it’s this: You’re doing great.

If you want to make some adjustments, that’s great, but make sure you do so Also Celebrate the foundation you are building. Fitness should no longer be a reason to feel bad.

Most of us already have so much to juggle: work, home, imperfect schedules, and limited time and energy.

The more people I talk to, the more it becomes clear to me that what most people need is not more information – but confirmation and clarity: that they are on the right path. That they are doing enough. The She are enough.

And often that clarity comes from understanding what you can do releasenot what else you need to add.

If you strength train a few times a week, take short exercise breaks during the day, or do a few hours of general activity each week, then you’re already doing it so much good.

Everything else? Details.

Of course, it can be fun to get lost in the details, but not at the expense of celebrating what you’ve already accomplished.

Every representative. Every walking break. Every little victory.

Everything counts.
