How to save all your TikTok content and data

How to save all your TikTok content and data

As an active TikTok user, I tried to ignore the impending reality of next week closure. Although I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a last minute rescue, I still plan on trying Use it afterwards Yesterday on the 19th I started backing up all my data. If you are a TikTok user, you should do this too. Here’s how.

Download your likes, favorites and followers

My three main concerns before the ban are making sure I have it a list of people I followso I can follow them elsewhere, I grab videos that I have bookmarked since they probably had some benefit, and Saving my own videos. TikTok is the best place to start because they have a built-in feature that gives you all of this data as a document. You can request a data download of all your personal settings, including your likes, followers, follows, bookmarks and a list of your posts. Note: This does not include actual videos; It’s more of an inventory that you can work on.

To request this data, go to your profile and click on the menu in the top right. Go to Settings and Privacy > Account > Download your information. Note that you can choose which types of data you want to download and what format you want them in (text file or JSON). A text file is currently more useful because it outputs your information in a format that you can easily access. However, if you have a JSON file, you may be able to work with future utilities to import follows and likes to another platform. I therefore recommend accessing both data formats. This means you have to do this exercise twice. Once for the text file, once for the JSON file (a computer language) to save in case a TikTok replacement can use it in the future to make importing follows or likes easier.

Once the file is ready, you will need to confirm an SMS code sent to the phone number on file for the account to download the file. While you’ll likely be doing this process on your phone, once the file is downloaded, locate it in your file manager, click Share, and then email it to yourself.

How to save your own videos

The most laborious (but cost-effective) way to save your own videos is to simply go to each one and download them individually. Once the video opens on your profile, click on the three dots in the bottom right corner and select “Download Video.” If it sounds labor intensive, it is.

If you are a confident programmer with JSON experience, you can use a free tool developed by a TikToker that he open sourced GitHub. You need this JSON file for this method to work.

TokBackup interface

A simpler solution was Tokbackupa web utility that you can use from your desktop. For $5 per month, you can download up to 6,000 videos for up to three profiles (higher-priced plans allow more profiles). This utility allows you to download all videos of any profile, not just your own. So while it won’t save all of your favorite videos, if you love a particular creator, this is a sensible solution to grab all of their videos to re-watch at home. Tokbackup took about ten minutes to retrieve all 100 of my videos, and I was pleased that the data download also included my most common hashtags. Once the utility captures it, click “Download” to save a ZIP file to your hard drive. At 100 videos, my file was almost 4GB, so you may want to find a place in the cloud to save the file. After downloading, remember to cancel your account so you won’t be charged next month.

There are additional tools, e.g Repurpose.iowhich supposedly downloads all your videos for you and even posts them to other platforms, but to one high costs ($349 for the year).

How to save your favorite or like videos

If you specifically want to get videos from other people that you like or have added to your favorites, you can download them individually as described above. However, I was lucky with that MyFaveTT Extension for Chrome that is free.

After installing, open it and connect to TikTok on desktop. From there, you choose whether you want to save your Likes or Favorites videos and set a location for them on your hard drive. This went pretty smoothly and over the course of an hour all of my bookmarked videos were saved. Depending on how many videos there are, this can take up significant resources on your hard drive. Therefore, as described above, you may want to have an online storage space for the videos until you need them.

While I wish there was a single utility that would capture all the data and videos I want at once, the combination of these methods will ensure you safely remove all of your content from TikTok.
