How to Know If Your Plan is Working (Nerd Fitness Challenge)


Depending on how the beginning of the year went, you may be feeling one of two things right now.

Either:

“Hey, this is actually going pretty well.”

Or:

“I thought I had more momentum.”

Both are completely normal. And this step is important for both reasons.

The fourth and final step: Zoom out.

This isn’t about judging yourself or deciding whether you’re “successful.”

It’s about learning how to execute your plan like a trainer would.

In the following video, I’ll explain to you how to do exactly that using three simple questions.

Question 1: What went well?

Write down the first one or two things that come to mind.

It may not be surprising, but for the people I work with, this is often the most difficult step. I think because we are our own worst critics and it is easier to point out what is NOT working than what is working.

However, there is a lot of gold to be mined here, so it’s worth it!

Question 2: What was a challenge?

This is where you notice things like unexpected obstacles or pitfalls for which we need a different strategy.

If consistency has been low, that usually means the plan needs to be simpler – not that you need more motivation.

Question 3: What (if anything) needs to change in the future?

Now that we know the victories and challenges, let’s evaluate what to do next.

In the video I describe some details about how to determine if your progress is realistic. This will help guide you as you consider next steps.

Sometimes the right answer is, “Nothing. I just need more time.”

Other times, it’s an adjustment to your training, eating habits, or overall strategy.

Your action step

Open yours Worksheet and complete the “Zoom Out” section. (Or use Tobbes great online version!)

Use your answer to the question “What (if anything) you should change” to update your core practices.

Then it’s time to start the cycle again.

Track every time you complete a core exercise. Fill the track wheel. Then every 2-6 weeks (or whenever you finish the bike), zoom out and make adjustments.

This is how real progress happens.

When I see a client adopt this strategy and treat each action like its own mini-experiment, I know they will make progress.

If answering these questions feels more difficult than expected, that’s normal.

Zooming out is a skill. And like any skill, it gets easier with practice and feedback.
