Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has urged Jack Grealish to work harder and reclaim his place in the starting XI.

The 29-year-old played a crucial role in Manchester City’s treble-winning 2022-23 season, making 50 appearances across all competitions.

Grealish contributed five goals and 11 assists, helping the team secure the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League titles.

Despite his previous successes, the England international has struggled to make an impact this season.

In Saturday’s 4-1 Premier League win over West Ham, Grealish was on the bench while Brazilian winger Savinho took his place in the starting line-up.

The City boss made it clear that he expects Grealish to prove his worth and fight for his place in the team.

“Savinho is in better shape than Jack and that’s why I played against Savinho,” Guardiola explained.

“Do I want the boy who won the treble? Yes, I want it, but I’m trying to be honest with myself about it. You have to fight. You can say it’s unfair.

“If you think that, then it’s fine, but you have to prove (to me): ‘Okay, I will fight with Savinho to deserve to play in this position’, every single day, every single week, every single day single month.”

Grealish’s season was also disrupted by injuries which limited his options. So far he has only started six league games.

Despite his recent struggles, Guardiola has expressed his confidence in the player’s abilities.

“Two weeks ago he was injured and he needs rhythm and skill, but the players need training,” Guardiola added.

“I have no doubts about the quality of Jack or any of these players. You wouldn’t be here (otherwise).

“I know he can do it because I’ve seen him. I saw his level, and that’s what I want, in every single training session and in every single game.”

Manchester City returns to the FA Cup on January 11th when they host fourth division side Salford City.
