Great Britain facilitates sanctions against Syria


Rabat – On Thursday, April 24th, the United Kingdom freezed the assets in the Syria’s defense and interior, including its most important secret services, including the management for general secret services and the Air Force Intelligence Agency. These are all companies that were previously sanctioned for their role in the suppression of civilians and the support of the regime of the former President Bashar al-Assad.

This step takes place four months after Assad from opposition groups under the direction of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), an armed group that was still referred to as the “terrorist organization” by Great Britain and us as a “terrorist organization”.

While the new Syrian government under President Ahmed al-Sharaa is trying to rebuild the country’s economy and international relations, it asks the countries to increase the sanctions against Syria, and argues that these measures were taken against the previous government and should not have any space in the current body.

Prime Minister Keir Starrer’s office said the decision aims to support Syria’s economic recovery, to promote the return of Syrian refugees and to promote regional stability. The British government had previously lifted sanctions against the Syria’s central bank and oil companies in March.

The sanctions remain with persons associated with the Assad regime to hold the regime accountable for its actions during the Syrian Civil War.

Restrictions on the export of certain goods and technologies also remain. This includes the ban on military, advanced communication and monitoring equipment as well as double use technology. which can be used for both civilian and military purposes.

The regional chief for Arab states in the United Nations development program (UndP), Abdallah al-Dardari, asked the Syrian authorities last week to start the economic recreational process without waiting for the western countries to raise their sanctions and stated in an explanation that “the waiting of sanctions is canceled”.
