The winter weather currently prevailing in southern Germany has led to significant disruptions to air traffic, particularly at Frankfurt Airport, one of the largest hubs in Europe. A total of 120 flights were canceled on Sunday, representing almost one in nine flights, while many others suffered significant delays.
Snow, ice and sleet significantly slowed airport operations and caused additional delays in clearing runway snow and de-icing aircraft. Passengers are advised to check the status of their flight before traveling to the airport and allow additional time for their journey.
Other German airports are also suffering from the consequences of this cold wave. In Munich only one track is still in operation, which is leading to several cancellations and delays. There are also disruptions in Stuttgart due to lengthy de-icing work.
The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued ice warnings for large parts of the country and is forecasting freezing temperatures and persistent snowfall. In addition to airports, road and rail traffic are also affected, and numerous accidents and disruptions have been reported in several German regions.
