Geraint Thomas has announced that he will step down from cycling at the end of the season.
The 38-year-old announced on Monday morning that he would bring the curtain for a successful 19-year professional career. British Cycling says that the September tour through Great Britain will be its last race.
Thomas claimed both at Beijing 2008 and in 2012 before pursuing the Olympics team tracking gold in 2018.

“This year will be my last year to run my bike,” said Thomas to his podcast. Geraint Thomas Cycling Club. “It is strange, it has always been in mind, in the past four years when I thought it was my last, but it is official, this will be my last year.
“If you say it loudly, it’s like ‘Blimey, in seven to eight months it will be done’. You can’t do it forever; I get a few gray hair. I don’t want to do one too many.
“I still enjoy racing, racing, training and the fitter. I have loved that since I was 12. Last.
“The main thing is the family, Macs (his son) will be six this year, that’s Bonkers. I am glad that I went on for so long that he enjoyed running and remembering me. When I won the tour, Macs a year later I thought it was cool for him to be nearby at the time.

Thomas, who represented the UK at four Olympic Games, was part of the quartet, who watched the team in Beijing in 2008 in Beijing and defended the title four years later at London 2012.

Thomas won the Tour de France in 2018
Thomas’ professional defining moment was his perfect tour de France victory in 2018, which became the third British and only Welsh cyclist who won the Tour de France.
He was appointed officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2019 New Year’s list for cycling.
