The mining industry plays a key role in the global energy transition, providing the critical minerals and metals needed for new, environmentally friendly technologies. The company is also under pressure to reduce its own carbon footprint and protect communities affected by its mining activities around the world. BHP chief executive Mike Henry says the world’s largest mining company is at the forefront of these changes, increasing production while focusing on sustainability. “It is fundamental to the BHP strategy (…) The world also needs many more other metals and minerals. If we want to do this in a way that does not have negative consequences for other aspects of environmental protection, we must set and maintain high standards.”
