Frenkie de Jong has suggested he will leave Barcelona if he doesn’t get more playing time.

The Netherlands international remains a marginal figure under coach Hansi Flick as he struggles with the effects of long-standing ankle problems.

De Jong has played just eight games this season and did not appear on the bench in recent defeats to Leganes and Atletico Madrid that derailed the club’s La Liga title bid.

It was another sign that Flick has little faith in the former Ajax midfielder, whose contract expires in June 2026.

Could be offered at a cheaper price

Reports from Spain claim that financially strapped Barca would only accept €20 million for the 27-year-old at the end of this season and De Jong admits his willingness to sign a new contract depends entirely on his commitment in the coming months.

In an interview with Voetbal International he said: “My contract extension is an issue for the newspapers here, but not for me.” I want to play football and then I will see what the club wants to do with me and then I will do it together with mine My advisor and my family decide what I want to do.

“People think that I want to stay at Barcelona forever because life outside of football is very good here, and it is good, but it is still less important than what happens on the pitch.” If I do that If I felt like I couldn’t contribute enough or if the team couldn’t keep up, I’d leave.”

Barca’s stay was a disappointment – De Jong

De Jong joined Barca in the summer of 2019 and admits things didn’t quite go according to plan.

He added: “I have to admit that when I signed for Barcelona I didn’t expect that after four years I would only win a La Liga, a Copa del Rey and a Spanish Super Cup.”

“I expected at least double that, so this disappoints me. Things happen and can’t be predicted.”
