After the drama of the Champions League’s return this week, it was now the Europa League’s turn to provide some midweek action.
16 games were played on Thursday, with Besiktas’ 4-1 win over Athletic Club forming the warm-up game on Wednesday evening.
The two English clubs were in action: Manchester United hosted Rangers and Tottenham traveled to Hoffenheim.
Ruben Amorim’s Red Devils scored a late winner to beat Rangers, while Ange Postecoglou’s Lilywhites almost squandered a comfortable lead in Germany but managed to hold on for three vital points.
Elsewhere, Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce took on Lyon but were unable to prevail against their French opponents, drawing 0-0 at home.
Portuguese club Porto hosted Olympiacos but failed, losing 1-0 thanks to a goal from Ayoub El Kaabi in the 79th minute.

Roma moved to AZ Alkmaar and, like so many others, experienced a surprising result. The Italians lost 1-0 thanks to former Tottenham player Troy Parrott, who scored the only goal of the game.
Lazio clashed with Real Sociedad in a heated argument. The hosts ran out 3-1 winners and Aihen Munoz was sent off by Sociedad in the first half, making it difficult to turn the tie around from that moment on.
And Ajax experienced a surprising result, losing 0-1 away to RFS.
But that wasn’t the end of the action, as dozens more goals flew across the stadium on what was an excellent night of European football.
