Everton sack managers less than three weeks after takeover by Friedkin Group
Everton have sacked coach Sean Dyche after less than two years in charge after five games without a win left the Toffees one point above the Premier League relegation zone.
Backroom staff Ian Woan, Steve Stone, Mark Howard and Billy Mercer have left Dyche. This is the Friedkin Group’s first major decision since taking over the club on December 19th.
U18 national team head coach Leighton Baines and captain Seamus Coleman have taken over on an interim basis.
Dyche Everton record
Former Watford and Burnley boss Dyche was appointed in January 2023 and endured a turbulent period at Everton, which began with saving the club from relegation on the final day of the 2022/23 season.
Everton were deducted a total of eight points last season for breaching Premier League financial rules but finished 14 points above the relegation zone.
Dyche had repeatedly refused to reflect on whether he expected to be responsible for Everton’s move to the new 52,888-capacity stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock next season.
A 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth on Saturday gave them three wins in their first 19 league games, with only bottom club Southampton having won fewer games.
The Saints are also the only team with fewer goals than Everton (15) in the top flight this season, which puts them five points behind second-worst scorers Ipswich Town.

Friedkin Group dismisses Dyche
Speaking on December 20, Dyche said that the Toffees’ new chief executive Marc Watts was “fully supportive” of him after a “very informal” meeting at the club’s training ground.
Watts, who was appointed after Farhad Moshiri’s purchase of the club was completed, met with Dyche and women’s team manager Brian Sorensen and held a meeting with other staff.
“Aside from winning games – which all managers have to do – they have made it clear they have nothing but support for me,” Dyche said.
“It was about pushing the format forward. They fully support me, the employees and the team in the future. There is nothing but support and no other thoughts about anything else.
“I haven’t said too much about what I want. They asked questions about what I had learned in my time and the overall feel of the club.”
Everton host League One club Peterborough United in the third round of the FA Cup on Thursday (7.45pm GMT).
