A civil rights group based in Houston calls on the Houston Independent School District (HISD) to take urgent measures after three students from the Afghan middle school attacked on March 3. by a group of their classmates on the Paul Revere Middle School.
“It is absolutely unacceptable that every student is supposedly attacked violently and then abandoned by the institution that she should protect,” said Cair-Houston director William White.
He added that HISD approves school broadcasts for the girls, completely examined the attack and ensure that all those responsible are being held accountable, including the employees who have not intervened. Cair also calls for trauma-informed support for the victims and their families as well as stronger guidelines to prevent future attacks.
Cair-Houston shared a blurry photo of the injured girl in a neck clip on social media and a video of the alleged incident Show an employee who tries to break up the fight.
In a statement, HISD said that disciplinary measures against seven were taken to the attack. The district said the measures agreed to the code of conduct and emphasized that the safety of the students was taken seriously.
“The seven attackers in the incident received disciplinary consequences with the code of conduct of the district. The victim in the incident was offered a school transmission that is currently being processed,” said HISD.
The district also explained that on March 6, shortly after the incident, the school staff met one of the victims and informed them about their rights.
However, the family and her lawyer Ahsan Patoli say that the process was too slow. “What we ask is very, very simple,” said Patoli. “We asked for the girls to be transferred to another school. This incident occurred more than a month ago. We are still waiting for it.”
While HISD claims that some of the details shared by Cair do not match the results of their internal examination, they agree that the attack was serious and needed measures.
