Davies injury setback keeps Postecoglou in a bind

Depleted Tottenham will be without Ben Davies at home to Wolves on Sunday after the defender suffered a setback on his return from a hamstring injury.

Wales international Davies has not played since Spurs’ 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth on December 5. Coach Ange Postecoglou assumes that the 31-year-old will be out for “a few more weeks”.

Centre-back Radu Dragusin is a doubt after being substituted in Tottenham’s 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest on Thursday, adding to the injury list of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.

Spurs vs Wolves: “Another test”

“We have been in a difficult situation for some time,” Postecoglou said. “Due to the nature of football and the schedule, we’ve always been on a fine line. It’s another test for us.”

Tottenham’s only clean sheet in their last nine games came against bottom side Southampton, who have scored four fewer goals than any other team in the top flight.

Postecoglou, who moved 18-year-old Archie Gray back from midfield to defense to defuse the situation, said it was “a bit too early to say” whether Dragusin would be involved at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“He sprained his ankle and felt like he couldn’t carry on,” the Australian added after Anthony Elanga scored the only goal of the game. “We’ll have to wait and see.”

Tottenham results

Spurs have lost four of their last five league games, with the 5-0 win at Saints on December 15 being their only win in their last six top-flight games.

Wolves beat Manchester United 2-0 at home on Thursday, making it their consecutive win since Vitor Pereira was appointed manager.

They are now the eighth best scorers in the division and one point ahead of third-bottom Leicester City.
