Chelsea coach Maresca defends goalkeeper Sanchez after the latest mistake

Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca defended goalkeeper Robert Sanchez after his latest mistake gifted Wolves a goal in the Blues’ 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.

Sanchez dropped a corner at the feet of Matt Doherty, who equalized after Tosin had given Chelsea the lead.

The former Brighton goalkeeper has now made four errors leading to goals in the Premier League this season, only Ipswich Town’s Arijanet Muric (5) has made more in the competition.

Maresca said: “You said it was the fourth mistake (that led to a goal)? OK, and how many times did he save us? More than four. So no problem.

“It happens. Mistakes happen to him, the strikers, the midfielders. He’s fine.”

Chelsea signed Filip Jorgensen last summer and sent Kepa and Dorde Petrovic on loan to Bournemouth and Strasbourg respectively.

Chelsea had not won in the Premier League since mid-December but secured victory thanks to second-half goals from Marc Cucurella and Noni Madueke.

Maresca was pleased with how his team responded to Sanchez’s mistake and ended a five-game winning streak.

“We were great for the first 40 minutes,” he said. “The performance was excellent and we dominated the game. We scored and created many more chances.

“In the last five minutes of the half, what happened in the last five games happened again.

“Wolves had a bit of confidence and achieved their goal and then we started to struggle a bit. We started quite well in the second half and after the second and third goals we were in control.”
