Doha – Cape Verde has again arrested his position, which supports the territorial integrity of Morocco when the country’s foreign minister, José Filomeno de Carvalho, articulated the unshakable support of his country today during his official visit.
At a press conference after talks with the Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Monteiro repeated the “position constant” of Cape Verde to support the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Morocco about her entire territory, including the western Sahara.
“The Autonomy plan Presented by the kingdom in 2007 is the only credible and realistic solution to settle this regional dispute, ”said Dias Monteiro during the press conference.
He too praised The United Nations’ efforts as a “exclusive framework for achieving a realistic, practical and sustainable solution for the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara”.
Bourita thanked Cape Verdes “constant and firm support” for the position of Morocco to the Sahara dispute and welcomed the 2022 opening of the Cape Verde General Consulate in Dakhla, which demonstrated the country of the country for the sovereignty of Morocco.
This latest confirmation is building on the defined position of Cape Verde on this matter. In July 2024, Miryan Vieira, Cape Verdes State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Had used Morocco’s autonomy plan as the “most serious and credible political solution” for the end of the western Sahara dispute.
When asked about self-determination concerns, Vieira pointed out that the Autonomy Initiative Morocco consists of 35 points, which deal with self-determination criteria and at the same time preserve the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Moroccos over its southern provinces.
“I have to say that there is also a need to demystify something that the concept is. There are different theories about self -determination, ”Vieira said in an interview in July last July.
“What interests us is that the international community is primarily a solution to this conflict, especially as part of the consultation as part of the United Nations patronage.”
Former Foreign Minister of Cape Verdean, Luis Filipe Tavares, has also campaigned for the extended international support for Morocco’s position.
In October 2024, King Mohammed VI’s speech reacted about Taavares territorial integrity fights that “the struggle for territorial integrity only exceeds politics” and “a bourgeois duty that connects nations and peoples”.
“It is absolutely necessary that our efforts continue to be a political leader and friends Morocco.
In addition to the diplomatic support, bilateral cooperation between the two countries is further reinforced. During their meeting, Bourita and Dias Monteiro agreed to organize a week of business in both countries in the second half of the 2025.
They also checked cooperation in various sectors, including tourism, vocational training, financial services, fishing and port management.
In January Cape Verdes Minister of State for National Defense, Janine Tatiana Santos Lelis, visited Rabat to discuss military cooperation with Abdelatif Loudyi, delegated minister of Morocco, who is responsible for the national defense management.
The meeting led to the conclusion and signing of a military cooperation agreement in the near future.
