As questions grow about the stability of the Iranian regime, Canada has condemned it Iran for killing and arresting citizens who protested against the government and the high cost of living.
In a joint statement with Australia and the European Union on Friday, Foreign Minister Anita Anand praised the courage of peaceful protesters and attacked Iran’s use of lethal force.

The statement said at least 40 people had died at the hands of Iranian security forces, although activists believe the death toll is more than 10 times higher.
Prime Minister Mark Carney posted on Friday that these reports were “deeply concerning” and called on Iran to allow freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
Conservative lawmakers and groups supporting Israel posted frequently about the protests, suggesting that the Islamic republic, founded in 1979, was on the brink of collapse.
Canada cut diplomatic ties with Iran in 2012 and Ottawa gave a branch of the Iranian army, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a terrorism designation in 2024.
