An uncle of recently toppled Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad has fled to the United Arab Emirates via Lebanon, according to Lebanese officials. Rifaat al-Assad, known as the “Butcher of Hama” because he oversaw the violent suppression of an uprising in the 1980s, has been charged with war crimes by Swiss prosecutors.
