Increasing the price of butane gas “is not on the government’s agenda,” said the minister’s delegate for the budget for the economy and finance, Fouzi Lekjaa, in Rabat on Monday.
In response to an oral question from the socialist opposition group Ittihadi in the House of Representatives on the topic “Impact of the increase in gas prices in Morocco”, Mr Lekjaa stated that the government spends more than 15 billion euros annually on DH to subsidize the consumption of butane gas, “a support, which is basically intended for the most disadvantaged categories who need it the most”.
The minister further noted that “the most vulnerable categories, i.e. 20% of the poorest population, will benefit from only 14% of this support, while the wealthiest categories, i.e. the 20% of the poorest rich, will benefit to the tune of 27%.” double what the poorest categories receive.
