Boxing results: Jaime Munguia is stopped by Bruno Surace!


Former WBO light middleweight champion Jaime Munguia (44-2, 35 KOs) was upset and was knocked out by EBU silver middleweight champion Bruno Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOs) at 2:36 of the sixth round of a scheduled 10- Round stopped fight on Saturday evening in Tijuana, Mexico.

In the first round, Munguia had a slight lead with both throws after the bell, forcing referee Juan Jose Ramirez to intervene and stop the ball.

A minute into the second round, Munguia landed a left hook to the chin and Surace went down for the first time in his career after an 8 count from referee Ramirez. He managed to get to the bell. In the third round, Munguia had Surace on defense throughout the round, mostly against the ropes, and was lucky to survive until the bell.

In the fourth round it was all Munguia. With half a minute left, Surace landed his best punch of the fight, a right uppercut to the chin that rattled Munguia. In the sixth round, Munguia had to corner Surace several times but couldn’t get enough punches together to finish Surace.

Munguia landed two lefts to the chin in the sixth round, landing Surace on the ropes. Surace countered with a right punch to the chin and Munguia landed on his back, narrowly beating the count at nine, but referee Ramirez saw enough and wisely called a stoppage. It took over ten minutes for ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr. to announce stoppage time of over ten minutes.

Junior middleweight Jorge “Chino” Garcia defeated Kudratillo “The Punisher” Abdukakhorov 20-4 (12) 32-4 (26) by a ten-round unanimous decision.

In the first three laps, Abdukakhorov overtook Garcia. In the fifth round, Garcia landed uppercuts and backed up Abdukakhorov.

In the sixth round, Abdukakhorov moved further to southpaw and returned to right winger.

In the ninth round, Garcia was the stronger of the two. In the tenth and final round, Garcia injured Abdukakhorov in the final seconds.

Points 97-92, 99-90 and 99-90.

In the co-main event, super bantamweight Alan Picasso, 31-0-1 (17), defeated southpaw Yehison Cuello, 13-3-1 (11) at 1:55 of the third round of a scheduled ten rounds.

The first two rounds were all about Picasso. In the third round, Cuello was knocked down by a left hook to the body, causing referee Juan Jose Ramirez to count the entire ball.

Super bantamweight Sebastian “Logan” Hernandez Reyes, 18-0 (17), stopped Sergio “El Canalla” Sosa, 14-5-3 (3), at 2:59 of the seventh round of a scheduled ten rounds.

In the first three rounds, Sosa worked on Hernandez’s body. In the fourth round, Sosa had Hernandez on the ropes for most of the round. In the fifth round, Hernandez came back and held his own.

In the seventh round, Hernandez left Sosa defenseless with a barrage of punches, prompting referee Edgar Lopez to stop the fight.

Feather WBC Youth Continental champion Christian “El Pelon” Islas, 11-3-1 (7), lost to southpaw Juan Anacona, 13-1 (6), over eight rounds.

Anacona was ahead in the first three laps. Islas had his best round in the fifth round, although he suffered a bloody nose.

In the final seconds of the sixth round, the action was halted when Islas complained about his right eye from an Anacona left attack. In the seventh round, Isla’s nose was bleeding and his right eye was partially closed. In the eighth and final round, Anacona had Islas on defense, who was supported.
